Thanks to Holly Holcomb, stylist and manager of The Hair Bar in Southlake, for answering this week’s reader question:

What are the top three tips for a bridesmaid to remember when choosing her hair style?

Weddings these days are becoming less traditional. That includes the hair styles of the bride and bridesmaids. The look that is “in” is no longer the tight, slicked back updo with curls on the top of the head. However, there isn’t just one trend for bridesmaids. There are many different types of looks to chose from. So, to help figure out which trend is right for the wedding and/or bridesmaid, I always ask these two questions:

 1)   What is the bride doing with her hair?

2)   Are the bridesmaid wearing the same dress or different styles?

The bride is the most important person that day, so whatever the bride is doing with her hair, the bridesmaid hairstyles need to be different so they don’t a.) look like the bride and b.) upstage the bride. If the bride wears her hair up (most usually do), the bridesmaids hair should be worn down, half up, or pulled to one side.

If the bridesmaid dresses are different styles, then the bridesmaid hairstyles need to be different. If the bridesmaid dresses are all the same style, the bridesmaids need to all have the same look to keep everything uniform.

Here are three key tips to remember when choosing a hairstyle:

  • If the bridesmaid dress is on the shoulder, the hair needs to be down and to one side on the opposite shoulder. This  evens out the look.
  • If the bridesmaid dress has a high neckline, a half up or updo look is best to show off the dress. (Too much hair and fabric can look messy.)
  • If the bridesmaid dresses are strapless or spaghetti straps, all the hair needs to be down with soft curls or waves. (Too much skin can be distracting and take away from the bride). I would add a fun braid in the front to keep it out of the bridesmaids faces so they’re not messing with their hair all day and evening.

Remember: you don’t want the bride to look like a bridesmaid so whatever style the bride decides, choose a different style accordingly!
