Mary and Rob like to consider their love story a fairy tale of the digital age. Mary was new to Dallas after graduating from Baylor, and Rob had moved home to work for his family’s home building business after graduating from Louisiana State University. A chance encounter on match.com led them to meet for the first time at the Inwood Tavern, and they both felt an immediate spark.
Mary was expecting Rob to pop the question when the couple traveled to her family’s ranch for Thanksgiving, but Rob wanted the proposal to be a complete surprise. The night before they left for the ranch, Mary was making a microwave dinner in her slippers and exercise clothes. Rob got down on one knee and “before the timer could go off, there was a ring on my finger,” says Mary.
When they found the grand and historic venue of Union Station, the inspiration for the wedding decor organically fell into place. For the wedding on September 12, 2015, Rob and Mary drew inspiration from train stations. They used vintage train tickets as place cards and vintage train schedules as programs—they even hired an actor to play an old-time train conductor as the evening’s MC. A September wedding suggested a rich autumnal color palette, and vivid purple bridesmaids dresses were chosen to compliment the soft hues of the floral arrangements. Groomsmen sported feather bow ties by Brackish Bow Ties—groomsmen wore turkey feathers while Rob wore a guinea feather. They returned to the feather theme with pheasant feathers incorporated into flower arrangements and bridesmaid bouquets. Details like these tied together the unique wedding that Mary and Rob were looking for, and made the night even more special.
When Mary looks back on the night, she recalls two particularly cherished moments. One was reading the letters the couple wrote to one another to be read before the ceremony, which made seeing one another as Mary walked down the aisle unforgettable. The other was a surprise father/daughter dance to “Time Warp” from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. On their big day, the traditional and the unconventional blended seamlessly. Between the sharing of communion at their traditional religious ceremony and the offbeat decor at the unique venue, Mary and Rob’s wedding day was truly the best of both worlds for the couple. -Sophie Lidji
