Shelby Hoge & Matthew Comeaux

Growing up in Highland Park, Shelby and Matt attended all of the same schools, but did not formally meet until Matt graduated from Texas Christian University in 2007. Shelby had just moved back to Dallas after graduating from the University of Oklahoma and the pair would often bump into one another while out with friends on the weekends. The officially fell for one another on St. Patrick’s Day 2010 while attending a mutual friend’s party. They set out on their first date that Easter Sunday and spent the next two years dating before Matt asked Shelby to marry him while vacationing at her family’s lake house on Lake Texoma in the spring of 2012.

Shelby has always admired Jan Barboglio’s designs and knew that she wanted to incorporate her style into the dreamy day. Fete Des Fleurs and The Ritz-Carlton arranged long, rustic tables and dark, wooden chiavari chairs dressed with purple and pink flower arrangements, candles, horns, and other earthy accents to create a warm and elegant vibe. The couple recalls their grandparent’s participation in the ceremony as one of the most special moments of the day. Shelby’s grandmother, Patricia Hoge Brown and Matt’s grandfather, Ernest Poulos, stood before the crowd and presented personal sentiments and wishes for the couple’s new life together.

Engaged: Nicole Jenkins and Ryan Williams

JenkinsEngagementRyan and Nicole met their sophomore year of high school, but they didn’t start dating until a little later. (Nicole was actually on a date with another guy when they first met.) Ryan had already turned sixteen that year and had his own car, so her date asked him for a ride to the movie theater for his date with Nicole. Ryan tagged along to the movie, which was a good thing when the date started to sour quickly. As the night ended, Nicole felt a connection to Ryan and they found ways to keep the date going so they could continue chatting. They ended up going on a date—alone—and developed a deep friendship. They wanted to develop their friendship first before heading down the romantic road, but at the homecoming game the following year, Ryan asked her to be his girlfriend and they’ve been together ever since.

Ryan and Nicole were in a long-distance relationship while Ryan was living in Italy. They weren’t happy with the arrangement of long distance, but they knew that there was a light at the end of the tunnel. (And an engagement.) Once he returned, they decided to never be separated again. They went on vacation to Grand Cayman Island and Ryan asked Nicole to be his wife at the Grand Old House restaurant. He planned quite the elaborate proposal on a private table on a patio looking out to the ocean. After Nicole said yes, they watched the sun set over the water as a newly engaged couple.

Ryan and Nicole both graduated from the University of Oklahoma. Ryan currently studies architecture and is scheduled to graduate in May of 2014. Nicole studied elementary education and graduates in December of 2014. She is currently seeking to transfer her certification to Texas and find an ideal school to work in. They are getting married at Marie Gabrielle Restaurant and Gardens in Dallas on November 8, 2014.

Ask the Expert: Planning a Wedding Party on a Budget

$

0

GarzaAskTheExpertThanks to Lisa Garza of Lisa Garza Taste Studio for answering this week’s Ask the Expert:

I would love to pull together an elegant affair without breaking my budget. Are there any tips or tricks for hosting a fabulous dinner and cocktail party without burning through my budget?

When hosting a beautiful event on a budget, think format first. The formats from most to least expensive are: seated dinner, buffet, and cocktail events. Events break down into four basic categories: food and beverage, rentals, service and gratuity, and decor. Each category can run you 25 to 30 percent of your budget. It’s important to decide what matters to you most. Keep in mind, you can stretch food and beverage, but you can’t fake service.

To trim cost on food and beverage, keep it simple! Choose foods that can be made ahead, work well at room temperature on a buffet, or that can be served family style. If you’re having a cocktail party, limit the options to three savory bites and a couple bite-sized sweets. For your bar, limit your selection to one or two signature batched out drinks, an inexpensive house white and red wine, Cava instead of champagne, and pony kegs in place of bottles or cans of beer. The industry standard for estimating beverage and glassware is two drinks per person the first hour of the event and one drink per person each additional hour.

Rentals can devour your budget! Figure on spending an average of a dollar per piece on china or glassware. Most guests do not get refills. Cut cost by choosing beverages that can be served in one all- purpose glass, instead of selecting three or four different glasses. Clients don’t realize that you have to overstock glassware when you have multiple styles of glasses. This means you’ll end up paying for glasses you never even used. I love using mason jars or stemless wine glasses. They’re appropriate for serving cocktails, beer, wine, and water. If you are having a cocktail party, serve foods that are single bites and can be served with just beverage napkins and don’t require a fork or plate.

When it comes to service keep a few things in mind. If your budget is tight, it’s still worth it to get help. Avoid the stress so you can enjoy your party. Hire at least one person to assist in setting up, serving guests, and cleaning up when it’s all over! Servers will run you $25 to $35 per hour with a four-hour minimum. Plan for at least one server for every 12 to 14 guests. Don’t forget to plan for a minimum of two hours of set up and clean up. For larger events I have staff arrive two hours prior, and stay at least an hour after to clean up. You can cut back on service by setting up a bar and a buffet, instead of passing food and beverages. This will give you the ability to cut your labor down by half!

Finally, decor in the age of Instagram and Pinterest can cost you as much or as little as you’re willing to roll up your sleeves and do some DIY! Go online and search away! Print pictures of your favorite ideas. Knowing what you want will save you time and money. Focus on local, seasonal floral, and integrate bowls of fresh fruits in bright colors lined with lemon leaves. Get creative with vases by using things you already have around the house. I love using mint julep cups, mason jars, and even bowls from my favorite china. Just fill the bowl with floral foam, and it becomes an elegant arrangement with a personal touch.

Events don’t have to break the bank. Remember, your friends and family are there to celebrate with you. Don’t let stress rob you of the fun and joy!

French mani perfection. Photo from Angela Bates and Matthew Keepman’s Real Wedding.

Brides deserve to look and feel their best on their big day, and we are here to help. From hair care and skincare to fitness and health tricks for wives-to-be, we’ve got you covered. Check back every Wednesday for advice, tips, and tricks from the local pros in beauty and health.

Your nail beds might not be at the top of your priority list during the week before your wedding. But imagine this: Everything is flawless for your big day. The lights are the perfect hue, the flowers are open and bright, your makeup is on point, and your hair is pinned to precision. You have the night of your life, and cannot wait to see the photos a few weeks later. They show up and all you see is the four chips in your nail polish or what a mistake choosing black was. The mani and pedi are more vital than you’d think!

Okay, maybe it’s not life or death, but they could be cause for an unwanted miniature photo bomb. Tom Nguyen from Zen Luxury Nail & Beauty Bar, a Best of Big D best manicure and pedicure winner, provided me with some important nail advice for pre-wedding beauty prep.

Nguyen said it’s best to get your nails done as soon as a day or two before the wedding. Most brides choose a pale shade of blush or neutral colors, or a classic French mani or pedi. He says the French is a very “bridal look.” And as much fun as nail colors can be, he recommends saving bold statements for another day: perhaps the bachelorette party. Sticking with classic and simple tones will ensure a polished look. He adds that, while trying to keep it classic, it is still important to allow your personality to shine through.

Some trends Nguyen has been seeing lately step toward a bolder look, though! Reverse French, ombre, and soak-off GelColor (a way to steer clear of chipping) have all been big right now. Gels, as most people know them, allow for color to last as long as two or three weeks, perfect for surviving a honeymoon.

Meghan Meehan & Don Shannon

Meghan and Don met at All Saints Presbyterian Church in Austin back in March of 2011. Don was putting away signs after helping to direct the post-service traffic and paused to say hello to Meghan as she was walking to her car. They emailed back and forth for the next two weeks while Meghan was out of town before finally setting off on their first date. The pair met for dinner at Matt’s el Rancho, then went out for frozen yogurt and have been together ever since.

The bride and groom selected shades of peach, mint, and grey to create a lush, English garden setting. Meredith Commender and Dietra Butler worked with vendors like Lush Couture Floral, Absolute Entertainment, and LeForce Entertainment to bring the couple’s vision to life. The newlyweds incorporated several sentimental touches to make their day extra special. Meghan tied her great grandmother’s necklace around her bouquet as her “something old” and asked her grandmother to stitch a bible verse in blue thread to the lining of her dress as her “something blue”, then ended the evening by having Cassie’s Frozen Yogurt serve dessert in a nod to their first date.

Going, Going, Gown Sample Sale at Patsy’s, A Bridal Boutique

Patys's

A Martina Liana gown, available at Patsy’s.

Patsy’s, A Bridal Boutique is holding their annual sample sale a bit early this year. Mark your calendar for next week—May 1, 2, and 3—to save big on your wedding dress. The store will have 50 gowns up for grabs all priced below $999 (that’s 90% off retail price in some cases). If that didn’t get your attention, maybe the designer list will: Judd Waddell, Martina Liana, Essense of Australia, and La Sposa.

If you’ve never shopped a sample sale before, here is how it works: Bridal stores carry gowns in the store (called samples) that each bride tries on before she custom orders her gown. The gown hangs in the store for a season or two, and then the store usually holds a sale to get rid of the last season’s inventory. That’s where your savings come in. Yes, the gown has been tried on and no, it is not custom. However, the gown is usually in great shape and with a few alteration tweaks, it will fit to your body and style specifications. Plus, you get a designer dress for more than half the price and not one wedding guest will know you bought it at a sample sale.

To shop the Going, Going, Gown Sale, you must have an appointment. Call 214-528-1227 to hold your spot.

Engaged: Brittany Harrison and Eric Brady

HarrisonEngagementBrittany and Eric met while they were attending the University of Maryland—she was a freshman and he was a senior. They developed a friendship through their sorority and fraternity partnerships and would take casual trips to IHOP together. Before they knew it, they were spending more time with one another and became a couple.

Eric had recently started a new job and called Brittany on his way home to tell her to get dressed for a nice dinner to celebrate. They dined at Five Sixty and enjoyed a lovely meal chatting about Eric’s new job. When dinner was over, Brittany was tired from a long week and excited about going home to relax with Eric, but her boyfriend had other plans. Eric insisted they go out for dessert and Brittany agreed. (How could she not when he was acting so excited about dessert!) After thirty minutes in the car on their way to Las Colinas, Brittany started to get suspicious. They pulled up to a gondola that was waiting to take them on a ride—along with the aforementioned dessert. While under the bridge Eric told her to close her eyes and when she did, there was a ring waiting for her. She was shocked–and thrilled–that Eric had managed to surprise her with a proposal.

Eric graduated from the University of Maryland in 2008 with a bachelors in government and politics. He completed his J.D. from the University of Maryland School of Law in 2012. Brittany graduated from the University of Maryland in 2011 with a bachelor degree in English. She went on to receive her Ed.M. in prevention science and practice from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 2012. They will marry in Washington, DC on July 4, 2014.

Ask the Expert: To Juice or Not to Juice?

juice-fast

Photo by Manny Rodriguez for D Home.

Thanks to holistic health coach Kim Wilson Pollock for answering this week’s reader question:

I want to look my best on my big day. Should I consider a juice cleanse?

If you want flawless skin, hair & nails for your wedding day, start with what you are feeding your cells! Think back to biology class from high school. Do you remember that our bodies are made up of billions of cells? Our cells require vitamins and minerals not only to survive but also to thrive. Most of us lack the necessary nutrients that ensure glowing skin, hair, and nail health. Want an easy way to flood your body with just the right nutrients to achieve picture perfect beauty? Juice!

Juicing is a must-do to get wedding ready. The benefits of juicing include clear, beautiful skin, shiny hair, strong nails, boundless energy, and weight loss. Juicing is so effective because it delivers vitamins and minerals directly to your blood stream, no digestion required. It also keeps us hydrated, an important component of healthy skin, hair and nails. Dehydration can make our skin look dried out, leathery, and could lead to premature aging.

To get the benefits, juice mostly dark leafy greens and add just a little fruit. My “Beautiful Bride” juice recipe includes cucumber, celery, spinach, carrots, pineapple, lemon and ginger.

Skin

Let’s face it, our skin defines much of our standard for beauty. Every month you completely regenerate your outer layer of skin. Bright, youthful skin signals health and vitality. The most critical skin nutrient is Vitamin C, which helps in the formation of collagen, a protein that increases skin growth and blood vessels. Include one lemon and half a cup of pineapple in your daily green juice to maximize Vitamin C consumption.

Hair

Who doesn’t want shiny and supple hair? My favorite veggie to juice for healthy hair is not just for bunnies! Carrots have a high amount of beta-carotene, the precursor for vitamin A, which is necessary for shiny, well-moisturized hair, as well as promoting a healthy scalp, which is critical for healthy hair growth. Include four carrots in your juice to get the benefits for your hair.

Nails

Did you know that your nails can be a reflection of your bone health? All bone minerals such as calcium, magnesium, vitamin D and boron are important for nail strength. Iron status, B12 and folate deficiencies can be reflected in nail health. Be sure to eat beauty foods high in silica, which include leafy green vegetables, as well as a wide range of plant foods high in minerals and vitamins to grow strong, healthy nails. Adding spinach or kale to your juice is a perfect way to improve the health of your nails.

Juicing is important because it provides the nutrients that we need without having to eat eight to ten servings of vegetables a day. Brides in particular can become nutrient deprived because of stress, busy schedules, and poor eating habits. Adding my “Beautiful Bride” juice once a week three months prior to the big day with ensure photo ready skin, hair, and nails.

Kristin Juarez & Joel Fletcher

On Texas Independence Day in 2012, Kristin sat down to dinner with a childhood friend. Later in the evening, her friend’s cousin, Joel joined them and the pair hit it off immediately. A few days later, Joel asked if he could take Kristin out to celebrate her birthday. The romantic evening began with dinner at Taverna and dessert atop Reunion Tower at Five Sixty. On new years eve, nine blissful months later, Joel got down on one knee and asked Kristen to spend her life with him.

Kristin, with the help of Bella Flora, filled mercury glass pieces with blush and champagne tinted floral arrangements throughout the Rosewood Crescent Hotel space. They allowed for a few wintry details like fir trees and faux snow to compliment the season and dressed the bridesmaids in plum in a nod to Kristin’s love for Texas Christian University. The couple decided long before their wedding day that they would write letters to each other that they would open just before the ceremony began. Their most cherished memory from the perfect day is reading one another’s words of love, hope and excitement before they said their vows.

These tips will help you glow like Paige Holmes from D Weddings’ Real Weddings.

I don’t know about you, but I really cannot believe how fast 2014 has flown by. Are you as confused as I am that tomorrow is the first day of May? For the last few months, I’ve written this series for D Weddings’ Bridal Buzz, and we’ve covered beauty and health topics from head to toe.

As I come to the end of my amazing internship here at D, I’ve decided to compile the most important takeaways that I’ve been writing about since January, provided by the most knowledgeable, North Texas-based beauty and health experts. If you’re getting ready to walk down the aisle, read on to review some major tips you won’t want to forget about, and for more information on certain topics, click the category links.

Fitness

  • Always get a workout in on Mondays.
  • Eat complex carbs and protein for breakfast every day, like oatmeal with almonds and berries, and stick to veggies and protein for meals later in the day.

Nutrition

  • Stay away from processed foods; they’re all junk.
  • A Mediterranean meal plan is a good diet guideline: whole grains, hearty vegetable helpings, lean proteins, and healthy fats.
  • An occasional calorie reload, or “cheat day,” is good and stirs up the metabolism.
  • Create a goal centering on a healthy lifestyle, rather than the wedding date.

Juice Cleansing

  • Pros: You will feel healthier and fresher, take in more fruits and veggies than normal, improve complexion, and have more energy.
  • Cons: You can experience some irritability, hunger, or headaches from lack of caffeine.

Skincare: Skin Prep, Wax Prep, Massage Therapy, and Tanning

  • Find a skincare regiment that works best for you with products that suit your skin type, and most importantly, stick to it.
  • Try a monthly facial leading up to the wedding to keep pores cleansed and skin freshened.
  • Facial waxing: Set an appointment 24-48 hours pre-wedding day, stop taking skin medication two weeks prior, and take a pain reliever before.
  • Bikini waxing: Start getting treatments a few months ahead of the wedding, don’t trim or shave the area less than two weeks ‘til the appointment, and, again, dose yourself with a pain reliever.
  • Consider a Swedish, deep tissue, or cranial sacrum massage; they’re the most popular choices for stress-induced brides.
  • For fair skin, try a light spray tan (and don’t forget to exfoliate beforehand); for olive tones, try a tanning bed membership to get a great glow.

Makeup

  • Fresh-faced, smoky-eyed, or vintage-inspired makeup looks are the three hottest trends to try this spring.
  • Don’t overdo it with makeup. Remember, it’s only there to enhance your natural features.

Healthy and Trendy Hair

  • Use heat-protecting serums, wear hats, and use conditioning treatments regularly.
  • Get highlights and touch-ups done seven to ten days prior to the wedding.
  • Try floral headpieces, vintage clips, headbands, or soft up- or down-dos for the trendiest hairstyles.

Nails

  • Get your nails done 1-2 days before the wedding.
  • Stick with blush and natural hues so they don’t distract or blatantly stick out.
  • Stick with a classic French manicure and pedicure for a polished look.

CaroleChrisEngagementCarole and Christopher met while working at the United States Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria. They happened to be part of the same CrossFit group that Chris led and it was there they developed a friendship. Carole noticed how polite and sweet Chris was when he offered to work out with Carole when she was unable to make the classes. That led to a romance that lasted four months before they got engaged.

Chris developed an elaborate plan to ask Carole to marry him on the top of Aso Rock—a large outcrop and one of the city’s most noticeable landmarks (also where the Presidential Villa is located). However, Chris decided to make the last-minute change of plans and decided on an intimate proposal at Carole’s home. Carole was shocked and had no idea that Chris already had the pave diamond and sapphire band that Carole had picked out. Chris later designed Carole’s engagement ring when he got back to the United States and presented her with a cushion-cut sapphire.

Chris grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii and attended high school at Mid-Pacific Institute. Chris graduated with a Systems Engineering degree from the U.S. Navy Academy. He is a Navy SEAL Officer based in San Diego. Carole graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Government and Asian American Studies.  Carole is a Foreign Service Officer with the Department of State, currently working at the United States Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria. They will marry on September 6, 2014 at Piazza in the Village.

Amanda met Drew in 2008 while participating in an summer internship in Denver, Colorado. The pair spent the next three years dating before Drew got down on one knee on May 14, 2011 at The Dallas Arboretum and asked Amanda to be his wife.

The bride knew she wanted her favorite shade of purple to play a major role in their decor, so planner, Meredith Commender, blended lace, crystals, and touches of green and pink for a rich and glamorous vibe throughout the ceremony and reception at Bass Hall. When the happy couple looks back on the whirlwind of fun from that night, one of their favorite moments involved Drew being led up on stage to join their band in singing a ZZ Top song. After saying their goodbyes, the smiling pair exited the  building through a parade of  brightly colored confetti and waved as they rode away in a horse drawn carriage.
