Katie’s parents were best friends with Cole’s family for about five years before the couple met. “I always heard about their son my age, and he always heard about me, but we were in different cities and dating different people, so we never actually met until we had both been out of college for a few years,” says Katie. Their first meeting was at the annual Easter egg hunt at the Simon’s. Little did Katie know that Cole would be joining his family for the competitive day of diving for eggs. Even though Katie was in the “it’s complicated” phase of her current relationship, she agreed to go on a date with Cole. She thought he was cute, but she didn’t want to give off the wrong impression, either. But, Cole knew from day one he wanted to marry Katie. After driving away from the Easter extravaganza, Cole told his father he would marry her one day. And he was right—Katie and her ex parted ways and she and Cole started dating.
The couple was about to embark on a Christmas cruise with Cole’s family, but Katie was feeling a tad bummed that she wasn’t going to be with her family over the holiday. So before they left, Cole planned to take Katie to a carriage ride through Highland Park and to her parent’s house to open presents. As the evening approached, Katie could tell that something was going on. “Cole’s not someone who can hide his emotions well. They’re not just on his sleeve—they’re printed on the front of his shirt in big bold letters, and on that night, I knew something was up,” Katie says. As they drove up to her house after the ride, her house looked different: the lights were out and the windows were drawn. As she fumbled for the keys, Cole pulled her into the middle of the driveway and told her there was something he needed to ask her. Katie said yes to his sweet proposal and friends and family came out of their hiding spots to surprise the couple. But, they forgot something important—the ring! Cole had been so nervous he forgot to take his great- great-grandmother’s ring out his pocket to put on Katie’s finger.
Katie graduated from Southern Methodist University with a B.A. in journalism and a minor in Spanish. She is an account executive at Hill+Knowlton. Cole graduated from William & Mary with a degree in history. He is a senior associate at Skorburg Company. They will marry Saturday, September 26, 2015 at The Brooks at Weatherford.
