Katie Dysert’s memory of meeting her fiancé plays like a movie. And that’s not just because it was the moment she met the man she would eventually spend the rest of her life with—it’s also because the moment was so perfect, it almost seemed scripted. She was having dinner with several girlfriends, when one mentioned that she knew a guy she thought Katie was perfect for. Before she could finish her sentence, Kent Kirkwood—the very guy she was talking about—came walking down the restaurant stairs in front of them. The friend made introductions, and the pair spent the rest of the evening getting to know (and trying to impress) one another.
Four and a half years later, Katie was sure a senior-year spring break trip to Beaver Creek, Colorado, with her parents was quickly on its way to being a bust. She had endured a canceled flight and having her luggage lost. But when she walked into her parents’ condo, she was surprised to see Kent there, on one knee. After accepting his proposal, they celebrated with an open-air sleigh ride up the mountain to one of Katie’s favorite dinner spots, Beano’s Cabin. By the end of the night, she remembers, “My cheeks hurt from smiling so much.”
Katie, who is currently at UT Southwestern in the Physician Assistant Studies Program, and Kent, who works for a tech company called All Web Leads in Austin, will wed at the Chapel at Beaver Creek in Colorado on January 17, 2015. After the ceremony, guests will take a sleigh to Zach’s Cabin in Bachelor Gulch for dinner and dancing. The couple will reside in Austin.
