Thanks to Tara Layden from Winnie Couture for answering this week’s reader question:
How do I find a gown that best fits my body type?
Hourglass
If you are a bride with a balanced upper and lower body with a small, well-defined waistline, opt for the body-hugging mermaid silhouette. This is the perfect gown choice to enhance your feminine curves! The fitted silhouette will accentuate your best features by contouring to your body and dramatically flaring out at the knees. It’s the perfect combination for highlighting your tiny waist! Pictured left is the Vanessa style, a mermaid Alencon lace gown with plunging neckline, sheer lace cap sleeves and layered organza skirt.
Pear Shape
The pear shape is characterized by having fuller hips than shoulders. This body type is the perfect fit for the romantic and flowing A-line silhouette. As the name implies, the gown is narrow at the top and gradually extends out along the length of the body in the shape of an “A.” Not only is this silhouette great for all body types, but is best for showcasing the brides’s slender upper body and simply flows away from the hip area. Pictured right is the Sydelle style, an A-line gown with a soft tulle skirt, Swarovski crystal embellished top and sweetheart neckline.
Straight Lined
Brides with evenly proportioned shoulders to hips and a less than defined waistline fall into this category. With this body type the goal is to create curves! I suggest a princess style ball gown and—better yet—one with a ruched bodice. The pairing of a full skirt with a fitted top will accentuate the waist and achieve the illusion of a curvy figure.
